Saudi group hires Technip to work on first polysilicon factory

Powering the holy city of Mecca is part of Saudi Arabia's ambitious PV plans

Saudi PV start-up Idea Polysilicon Company (IPC) has hired France’s Technip to perform key engineering services for its first factory, according to local press reports, as the kingdom edges closer to a major commitment on solar energy.

Last week, in the run-up to the Doha climate talks, a Saudi official told local press the country will commission its first large-scale solar project by 2015 – as part of a $100bn strategy to establish several gigawatts of generation capacity over the next 20 years.

The Saudi government has not yet pulled the trigger on the solar initiative, but approval is expected early next year.
