US Q3 PV installations rise 44% on overall market strength

The US solar industry installed 684MW of photovoltaic capacity in the third quarter, raising new capacity through 30 September to 1.99GW, surpassing 1.88GW put in place for all of 2011, according to a Solar Energy Industries Association/GTM Research report.

Third quarter installations were the third most on record for the period and a 44% increase from a year earlier, although they declined 12% from the second quarter. There is now a total of 5.9GW of PV operating in the US from over 271,000 installations.

SEIA forecasts that an additional 1.2GW of PV capacity will be installed this quarter, bringing the 2012 total to 3.2GW. Given this growth, US share of global installations will rise to over 10% from 7% in 2011 and less than 5% in 2010. GTM Research expects that…
