Japan to add 1.8GW of PV this year on large-scale surge

Japan will install more than 1.8GW of solar power capacity this year, after a new subsidy triggered a surge in large-scale projects, predicts research firm NPD Solarbuzz.

Japan’s solar market has traditionally relied on residential systems but a new, very generous feed-in tariff introduced by the government on 1 July has brought a major shift in the market, supporting construction of megawatt-scale solar farms.

In the three months since the FIT was launched, nearly 1.5GW of projects have applied and qualified for the subsidy, according to NPD Solarbuzz.

The figure represents 60% of the total capacity the government was expecting between July 2012 and March 2013, notes analyst Junko Movellan.

It is also more than the total installations for last year Log in to read complete article.
