US SolarWorld workers qualify for 'trade-adjustment assistance'

Laid-off SolarWorld workers can receive federal "trade-adjustment assistance" after the US Department of Labor determined that Chinese PV imports contributed to the company's factory closure.

SolarWorld Industries America let go 186 people at its California factory after deciding to shutter it last autumn.

Those workers can access federal funding to be retrained and seek new jobs, including moving and living expenses. The Department of Labor (DOL) authorizes assistance when jobs are lost due to competition from foreign products.

It makes no determination on the legality of the imports. Those questions are being sorted through the US Department of Commerce (DOC) investigation of whether Chinese crystalline silicon PV manufacturers received improper government support and dumped products on the US…
