European grids must get wise to steep solar growth, EPIA says

The EU will derive about 2.2% of its electricity from PV this year, but grid operators have been working to lower figures

The challenges and costs associated with the fast-rising penetration of PV in Europe’s electricity system are set to worsen unless grid operators quickly come to terms with the sector’s steep growth trajectory, according to a new European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) report.

EU member states enshrined disappointingly low PV targets in the National Renewable Energy Action Plans they submitted to the European Commission several years ago, due in part to the higher cost of solar energy at that time.

Taken together, those action plans envisage the EU deriving less than 2.4% of its electricity from PV in 2020 – a figure used by many grid operators and regulators in their long-term planning.

In reality, the EU will derive about 2.2% of its electricity from PV this year, according to Giovanni de Santi, director of the Log in to read complete article.
