Medical scare as toxic cloud streams from REC US plant

Ailing Norwegian PV group REC received another blow when an incident at its polysilicon plant in the US state of Washington led to the formation of a toxic chemical cloud, forcing at least 11 people to seek medical care.

A chemical hose released a cloud of silicon tetracholoride and trichlorosilane into the atmosphere after “losing containment during cleanup”, says the company.

Local press pictures depict a huge white plume streaming from the plant, which then drifted southward following the incident on Friday morning.

The chemicals are an “irritant to the mucous membranes in the nose and throat”, according to REC.

All the roads surrounding the factory were temporarily shut down, leading to traffic jams in the area.

However, REC says preliminary investigations have found no evidence of ground-level concentrations of the chemicals.
