President Sarkozy says French workers need to retrain for new industries

On the cusp of unveiling his campaign for re-election, French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a stop at the headquarters of Photowatt to formally announce the ailing PV manufacturer will be taken over by state-run power company Électricité de France (EDF).

EDF’s bid, which essentially amounts to a state takeover, ends the long-running and increasingly political uncertainty surrounding Photowatt, which was placed in bankruptcy protection last November by its present owner, Canada’s ATS Automation Tooling Systems.

Through its French solar subsidiary Énergies Nouvelles Réparties (EDF-ENR), EDF has committed to taking on all Photowatt’s remaining 430-strong workforce in France, with most of the jobs to remain at its principal plant outside of Lyon.
