Australian solar tower would be world’s tallest structure at 1km

A Perth-based company wants to build the world’s tallest structure in Western Australia’s outback to generate round-the-clock solar electricity.

Hyperion Energy is seeking approval to establish Australia’s first plant powered by solar updraft technology.

Central to the A$1.6bn ($1.7bn) project is a 1,000-metre-high tower, surrounded by collector panels that the company claims will generate up to 200MW.

Solar updraft towers work on the principle that hot air rises. A large collector uses the sun’s energy to warm the air beneath its canopy. This warm air needs to rise and its only escape is through the tower. As it enters the tower, it would turn the blades of 32 turbines.
