Georgia Power gets green light for 210MW solar initiative

State regulators have approved Georgia Power’s plan to acquire 210MW of solar power through 2014, the largest voluntary initiative of its kind by a US investor-owned utility, the subsidiary of Southern Company says.

Georgia does not have a renewable portfolio standard.

The Georgia Public Service Commission in a 5-0 vote approved the utility’s Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative (GPASI).

To help meet the programme target, Georgia Power will purchase 60MW of utility-scale solar power in both 2013 and 2014 through a competitive request for proposal (RFP) program with projects ranging in size from 1Mw to 20MW.
