Polysilicon prices to continue downward slide in 2013: IHS

Producers of PV-grade polysilicon will enjoy a brief end-of-year respite from ever-tumbling spot prices, but market fundamentals suggest that downward pressure will quickly return and persist through 2013.

The spot price of polysilicon plunged by another 9% in October, its sharpest monthly drop in more than six months, as both short- and long-term buyers pulled back from the market, according to market researcher IHS iSuppli

The fall came even as lower tier Chinese polysilicon manufacturers reined in production, says senior IHS PV analyst Glenn Gu.

Gu forecasts another drop in November before the market finds its legs in December and January – a “potential rebound” likely to be driven by expectations across the PV sector of better times ahead in 2013.
