Marubeni to build 81MW solar plant in southern Japan

Marubeni has unveiled one of Japan’s largest solar projects with plans to build an 81.5MW PV plant in Oita city, in the country’s southern Kyushu island.

Marubeni will construct the plant on a 105,000-sq-metre coastal site in an industrial district.

The Japanese conglomerate will set up a special-purpose company and start work at the site next month, with commissioning of the plant due around March 2014.

Power generated will be sold to utility Kyushu Electric Power under a 20-year deal.

Marubeni says the plant will play a significant role in helping it to collect data in areas such as performance and maintenance as it plans future large-scale solar projects.

Japan’s solar generation capacity is on course for rapid growth
