Energy storage developing too slowly, PV industry warns

Gas pipelines. Suntech's Emde says it is best-suited as a complementary energy source to solar

The belief that cheap energy storage will revolutionise the PV industry, allowing it to compete head-on with dispatchable fossil fuels, is increasingly being challenged by experts who say the technologies are developing too slowly.

Holding out for energy-storage technologies that may not exist for a decade or more may prove a dangerous mistake, they warn.

On paper, storage is the “ultimate solution” for PV because it is also the “lazy solution”, says Pierre-Guy Therond, vice-president of new technologies at EDF Energies Nouvelles .

“It sounds great because it essentially turns PV into a gas turbine,” making solar-generated electricity instantly dispatchable even when the sun is not shining, he adds.

“But the reality is that electricity is very difficult to store — it’s the first thing you…
