PV production woes deepen as Suntech idling hits 1,500

Suntech's module and wafer capacities will remain at 2.4GW and 1.6GW

Solar module giant Suntech is idling 25% of its cell production capacity in China in a move it says will affect 1,500 staff.

The company says the reduction – which it describes as temporary – is in order to “right-size” its business against a background of global oversupply of PV equipment, and trade tariffs in the US and possibly Europe.

Suntech’s operational cell capacity will be cut to 1.8GW from 2.4GW following the part-closure at its plant in Wuxi, China.

Its module and wafer capacities will remain at 2.4GW and 1.6GW respectively.

The decision marks a blow for the Chinese solar manufacturing industry, which has hitherto mostly been spared the type of mass layoffs by flagship companies Log in to read complete article.
