Siliken shuts doors at Mexican PV plant after just 16 months

Siliken is among the most visible Spanish PV companies on the global stage

Spanish PV group Siliken will close the module plant it opened in Mexico just 16 months ago, as part of a restructuring plan that will see all of its production shrunk to two sites in Romania and Spain.

Siliken clipped the ribbon at its Tijuana plant in May 2011 after the controversial decision to shift production from its US facility in San Diego, less than 20 miles away.

The Tijuana plant was opened with significant fanfare, including the presentation of a ceremonial cheque by the governor of the state of Baja, who underscored Tijuana’s desire to play a role in the emerging clean-tech space.

Siliken hired an initial 180 employees at the factory and touted plans to boost its Mexican workforce to 500 by 2013.
