New PV may top 30GW in 2012 thanks to strong US, says IMS

The US market expanded by 120% to 1.7GW during the first six months of 2012

Global PV installations in 2012 will shatter earlier predictions and are likely to exceed 30GW on the unexpected strength of the US market, according to analysts at IMS Research.

The US market expanded by 120% to 1.7GW during the first six months of 2012, and is likely to add 4.3GW in the full year, putting paid to concerns that the preliminary trade sanctions placed on Chinese PV cells this spring would hinder growth prospects.

By comparison, the US market added 750MW during the first half of 2011, and 1.6GW during the whole of last year – both record performances at the time.
