Trina lowers shipment guidance as second quarter fails to shine

China’s Trina Solar lowered its guidance for the second quarter, as PV investors brace for an earnings season that looks likely to underwhelm.

Trina says it now expects to ship 390-420MW of modules during the second quarter, compared to its prior guidance of 500-520MW.

The Changzhou-based manufacturer also believes its overall gross margin could come in as low as 7%, compared to the 10% figure it previously touted.

Those figures would still represent an improvement over the first quarter of 2012, when Trina shipped 380MW of modules, reported a gross margin of 5.8%, and swallowed a net loss of nearly $30m.
