Inverter market leaders feel the heat from new contenders

The likes of Germany's SMA face a challenge building loyalty in new markets

The incumbent leaders of the global PV inverter business look increasingly vulnerable as competition in the sector heats up, according to IMS Research.

The top five suppliers – SMA Solar, Power-One, Kaco New Energy, Fronius and RefuSOL – all held onto their market ranking last year.

However, the biggest market gainers were all outside the top 10, with start-ups like Enphase Energy, SolarEdge, Advanced Energy and Emerson all notching up significant gains at the expense of the industry stalwarts.

And the competition will only intensify over the next five years as customers buy more inverters for ever lower prices.

Inverter shipments are expected to soar 23% this year to 32GW, but total revenues will grow just 3%…
