Solar pioneer sees industry move from fantasy to fruition

When Arno Harris plunged into the business a decade ago, he understood that for solar to become a mainstream player, it would have to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in annual investment.

Even so, the founder and chief executive of Recurrent Energy and new chairman of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) says the $147bn invested in the sector last year would have “seemed like a fantasy” in 2001.

Indeed, the industry’s own forecasts did not predict the success it is having today.

“It’s really been an amazing experience to see the industry, both from a technological standpoint and from a business standpoint, step up and deliver what it has,” Harris tells Recharge.
