Chile's big solar ambitions could face grid-capacity hurdle

How much capacity the Chilean system will be able to handle is unknown

Huge PV projects are being announced in northern Chile, leading to a 4.8GW pipeline — more than twice the peak demand of the regional grid.

The 1MW Calama 3 PV plant is already in operation in the desert region, considered one of the world’s best for solar power. The Solarpack project, which supplies state copper-mining company Codelco, was inaugurated last month — but is only the start.
