Now K Road wants California's 618MW Calico to be pure PV

Calico had originally been due to use SES SunCatcher technology

K Road Power, which acquired the embattled Calico development in southern California, now intends to use PV panels only, dropping plans to use Stirling dish engines for part of the huge project.

The company has also petitioned the California Energy Commission (CEC) to reduce Calico’s footprint by 16% — to avoid damaging wildlife habitat — which would cut its maximum capacity to 618MW.

In late 2010, the CEC approved Calico as a 663.5MW concentrating solar power (CSP) project using SunCatcher dish engines from Stirling Energy Systems (SES), a unit of Dublin-based NTR and sister company to Tessera.

At that time, Tessera had a 1.4GW pipeline of approved CSP projects in the California desert, but was unable to secure funding to build them.
