Schott Solar to close doors at c-Si division at cost of 900 jobs

Schott Solar has hit the off-switch on its large crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV division, with nearly 900 workers to be shown the door across sites in Germany, the US and the Czech Republic by the autumn.

Privately-owned parent company Schott, a specialist maker of glass, says it will continue to manufacture thin-film modules in the German state of Thuringia – mostly for use in building-integrated PV applications – as well as receiver tubes for concentrating solar power (CSP) projects.

But the decision to discontinue its entire c-Si division – which had capacities of nearly 500MW for both cells and modules – represents a stunning defeat for a company that has prided itself among the most diversified manufacturers in the solar-energy business.
