Chile’s first industrial PV plant opens at desert mine

Spain’s Solarpack has opened the first industrial PV plant in Chile — built in conjunction with state-owned mining company Codelco.

The 1MW Calama Solar 3 project in the Atacama Desert will help power Chuquicamata, reportedly the biggest open-pit copper mine in the world.

Solarpack, which has a 21-year power-purchase deal with Codelco, funded the $3.5m development.

“It is a first step in what we expect will be an important and potent development for the country, with the use of non-conventional renewable energies,” says Chile’s Energy Minister, Jorge Bunster. He is the country’s fifth energy minister since Sebastián Piñera was elected president in 2010.
