First Solar and GE in separate PV research partnerships

First Solar hopes a new partnership with semiconductor and clean energy research firm Intermolecular will lead to higher efficiencies for its cadmium-telluride (CdTe) PV equipment, while General Electric is joining with the Fraunhofer Institute to forecast the life remaining in PV plant power electronics.

First Solar and Intermolecular have agreed a collaborative development programme that includes Intermolecular's High Productivity Combinatorial platform, an approach to research and development (R&D) designed to conduct dozens of experiments in parallel, using software to identify promising materials from the results. They will search for "new opportunities in certain critical materials and processes that may significantly influence the conversion efficiency of CdTe technology", the companies say.
