AGL Energy and First Solar win Australian Solar Flagship funding

One of Australia's largest utilities, AGL Energy, and US-based thin film PV manufacturer First Solar win A$195m ($193m) of federal and state government funding to build two PV projects with a combined capacity of 159MW.

At a total cost of A$450M, AGL will develop a 106MW project at Nyngan, New South Wales (NSW) and a 53MW project at Broken Hill, NSW, which is expected to start operating in 2015.

First Solar will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services as well as its thin film modules for both projects.

Australia’s federal government will provide A$129.7m to support the project through its Solar Flagships programme, while the state of NSW will provide A$64.9m.
