OCI delays $3bn of polysilicon plant plans as prices plunge

South Korean polysilicon-maker OCI will delay construction of two new production plants as huge global overcapacity depresses prices for the solar raw material.

OCI – Asia’s largest producer of polysilicon – had originally planned to finish building a 20,000 tonne plant by the end of October at a cost of 1.6 trillion won ($1.4bn).

The company has now decided to “temporarily suspend” construction “due to the radical price decline mainly driven by the continued oversupply of the product”.

It also decided to postpone investment in a 24,000 tonne plant, scheduled for completion by the end of this year and earmarked for a 1.8 trillion won spend.
