Scorching growth leaves 2020 PV targets in its wake across EU

Italy aimed to have 8GW of PV capacity by the end of the decade, but added 9.2GW last year alone

A growing number of European countries have already met – or are on track to vastly exceed – their 2020 PV goals, leaving them with the tricky choice of ratcheting up their ambitions or snuffing out their markets.

At least five member states have already blown past the PV targets enshrined in their National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAP) submitted to the European Commission in 2009, according to new figures published by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA).

Some, such as Italy, set themselves stretching targets but have been caught off guard by an explosion of new installations. Others, like Denmark, have already overshot their 2020 PV targets because they had such paltry ambitions to begin with.
