First Solar’s decision to abandon its German factories presages bleak days for Europe-based manufacturers – and will have knock-on effects for the broader thin-film sector, industry experts say.

First Solar’s 17 April announcement also represents a crushing blow to Germany’s PV sector, which, in the words of one industry source, is now “at both a turning point and in state of crisis”.

While First Solar’s decision came as little surprise to close observers of the company, the government of the German state of Brandenburg – where the factories are located – said it had been caught off guard, and received the news via the press release.
