Gujarat claims world-first with canal-mounted PV project

India’s leading state for renewable energy is pushing ahead with what it claims is the world’s first canal-mounted solar power project.

Gujarat’s chief minister, Narendra Modi, has inaugurated a 1MW pilot installation on a 750-metre stretch of the Narmada Canal at Chandrasan village in the state’s Mehsana district.

The project is being developed by the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation with the support of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam — the agency that built the canal.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project was awarded to US-based solar developer SunEdison, which last week switched on a 25MW plant in India’s PV hotspot.
