Endgame looms for REC's Norway sites as Glomfjord shuts

REC's Herøya site is widely tipped to follow Glomfjord into oblivion

Norway’s Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) has closed permanently its final wafer line in Glomfjord, as analysts tell Recharge the PV manufacturer’s Herøya site – its last wafer plant in Europe – is likely to follow suit within months.

In a long-anticipated announcement, REC says its 300MW monocrystalline wafer plant at Glomfjord will be closed “shortly”.

REC will record the costs associated with the closedown in the first quarter of 2012, having already written down to zero the fixed assets of the Glomfjord plant last year.

The closure means the loss of another 200 jobs, representing a severe blow to the northern Norwegian village of Glomfjord – the site of REC’s first production facility, which turned out the company’s first wafer in 1997.
