South Australia's 40MW 'Big Dish' CSP secures federal funds

South Australia is a step closer to hosting a 40MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant after the consortium behind the project signed a deal to access A$60m ($63m) through the federal Renewable Energy Development Program (REDP).

Situated in Whyalla on the east coast of South Australia, the A$230m SolarOasis project will consist of 300 Wizard Power Big Dish solar-thermal concentrators, which are expected to generate 66GWh of electricity each year.

At 500 sq m, Wizard Power’s Big Dish is claimed to be the world’s largest paraboloidal-dish solar concentrator. It focuses sunlight to concentrations in excess of 2,000 times, generating heat at temperatures of more than 1,500º C, says the company.

The consortium is expected to start building the plant next year ahead of completion some time in 2015.
