AES Gener hopes to sell PV power to desert mining groups in Atacama

Chile’s AES Gener plans to develop up to 220MW of PV power capacity in the country's Atacama desert, and sees local mining companies as potential buyers.

AES Gener – which is majority-owned by Inversiones Cachagua, a subsidiary of AES of the US – has applied for an environmental permit for the $572m solar investment.

It will begin with a 1MW demonstration project linked to a 12MW battery-storage facility located at AES Gener’s Los Andes substation in Antofagasta province.

The pilot is designed to demonstrate the economics of running a PV project in the region, Michael Whittle, vice president of development for AES Gener tells Recharge.

Los Andes, as the main PV project is known, would be located on 880 hectares…
