Canadian Solar may build PV module plant in Japan

Canadian Solar is discussing plans to build a solar panel factory in Japan, where demand for imported PV modules is set to rise.

The proposals, first revealed by local news outlet Nikkei, were confirmed by the company’s sales manager Morita Keiichi.

“There is a plan but it is not yet determined,” he tells Recharge.

According to Nikkei, the company is currently in negotiations with local governments in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures to build a plant with 150MW production capacity. It could start manufacturing early next year.

Solar shipments in Japan rose 31% to 1.3GW in 2011, after the nation's 10 regional utilities purchased 50% more PV-generated electricity than the previous year.
