Dubai plans 1GW plant as solar gains traction in Middle East

Dubai has uncorked plans to build a 1GW plant encompassing both PV and concentrating solar power (CSP) over the next two decades, providing more evidence that energy from the sun is at last being taken seriously in the Middle East.

That trend was underlined when German group Conergy simultaneously announced it has won a contract to install 200kW atop the King Abdullah Financial District being built in Riyadh – the first rooftop PV system expected to blossom in the Saudi capital.

Though Dubai’s 1GW project will be built over a long time period, it nevertheless represents the largest solar project announced to date in the Middle East.

It dwarfs the 100MW Shams 1 parabolic-trough CSP project on track for completion by the middle of the year in Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s neighbour…
