How a FIT could help wean the Philippines off diesel

A new feed-in tariff (FIT) could stimulate strong demand for solar power in the Philippines — provided that it is not capped too low.

The Philippines passed its Renewable Energy Act in 2008 but has only recently implemented regulations supporting subsidies for solar, wind, biomass and small-hydro projects.

Developers are waiting for a final decision on how much capacity will be eligible for FITs and how much each sector will get. Heated debate on how the policy will affect consumers has delayed the decision. Initially expected in October, FITs should be released by January.
