Konarka links with ThyssenKrupp for steel BIPV roll-out

US organic PV start-up Konarka Technologies has signed a collaboration agreement with German steel giant ThyssenKrupp, heralding a joint push into the building products sector.

Massachusetts-based Konarka will work with ThyssenKrupp – Germany’s largest steel producer – to develop PV-coated construction elements that can be incorporated into building façades and other installations in multiple colours.

Lars Pfeiffer, head of quality and development at ThyssenKrupp’s colour/construction unit, claims the overlap between the two companies’ roll-to-roll manufacturing processes means Konarka’s technology can be incorporated into steel products “at low cost”.

This will make them attractive to architects and designers in the emerging building-integrated PV (BIPV) sector, the partners hope.
