US utility solar spreads beyond California, but state still leads

New rankings of the US's leading solar utilities – the key drivers of growth for the sector – show the market expanding beyond sun-drenched California and the nation's southwest.

The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), a trade group representing mainly solar-owning utilities, says the top 10 operators added 561MW of solar capacity to their systems in 2010 – a year-on-year doubling.

While California's utilities maintained their hold on the top of the rankings, those from beyond the Golden State represented seven of the top 10 in terms of new 2010 capacity and accounted for nearly two-thirds of the solar added last year.
