Samsung displays its 3GW thin-film PV capacity ambitions

Korea’s Samsung is ramping up production of thin-film solar cells in a bid to grab a leading share of the market from Chinese competitors.

Samsung SDI, the unit taking over Samsung Electronics’ solar business, is aiming to reach 3GW of thin-film production capacity by 2015, it says in a statement.

It expects to generate revenues of 3.5 trillion won ($3.3bn) in 2015 from the new solar business.

Samsung declines to reveal current revenues from its solar operations, but its capacity is small, standing at just 120MW by January this year.
