GE to build 400MW module factory, invest $600m in solar

Update: General Electric (GE) will build a 400MW thin-film PV module factory in the US as part of a $600m investment in the solar sector.

The new plant marks a massive ramp-up for GE's ambitions in the sector and throws down the gauntlet to rival First Solar. The company drew parallels with the 10-year growth of its wind turbine business when announcing a huge investment in solar production and technology.

The US industrial giant has also completed the acquisition of thin film specialist PrimeStar Solar, and says the new manufacturing facility will produce its "record-setting" modules.
