SCE contracts show PV is in sight of grid parity

Solar contracts awarded in 2010 by utility Southern California Edison (SCE) show the PV industry is making great strides toward cost parity with natural gas-fired electricity.

The utility is seeking approval from the California Public Utilities Commission ( CPUC) for 20 power-purchase agreements (PPAs) totalling 250MW of capacity, all of which are priced at less than the state’s market price referent (MPR), which approximates the 20-year cost of energy from a new-build 500MW combined-cycle gas plant.

The contracted projects, which SCE first announced in November and will be built in California, range in size from 4.7-20MW, and have expected capacity factors of 23-32%. They are scheduled to come online from April 2013, with 20-year contracts.…
