Thailand halts new solar proposals as sector ‘overheats’

Thailand has temporarily halted new proposals for solar projects after its target to achieve 500MW of capacity by 2022 was surpassed by almost 500% with committed and proposed projects.

The year-round tropical climate of the Southeast Asian state has spurred the growth of solar-energy facilities, and projects scheduled for completion by 2022 have now hit a total on-grid capacity of 2.97GW.

Only about 100 projects worth a total of 220MW set to come on stream by 2022 have been approved by the authorities, leaving 1.68GW of capacity contracted but not approved, and another 1.07GW merely proposed.
