SunPower to build 75MW solar plant in California

Long-tenured solar company SunPower is partnering with Flextronics to build panels at a new 75-megawatt capacity California factory.

SunPower, which said last week that a US manufacturing announcement was imminent, picked Milpitas, in California’s Silicon Valley, not far from its San Jose headquarters. The company says it will create 100 new jobs this year in partnership with Flextronics, a Singapore-based electronics manufacturing services provider.

The announcement, made with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Earth Day, is a victory for California. The state’s aggressive renewable energy incentives have come under pressure as unemployment remains high.
