Salazar says public land to play key role in solar development

President Barack Obama’s administration is accelerating efforts to open public land for solar energy development in the US Southwest, with 128 applications for utility-scale projects under review by Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Interior Secretary Ken Salazar tells Congress.





"I believe actions speak louder than words,” he said in testimony before the Senate Energy and Public Works Committee. Salazar estimates the projects involve 77,000 megawatts and 1.2 million acres of land.

Experts at both BLM and the US Energy Department’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory tell Recharge that as a general rule, 10% of proposed solar projects actually get built due to failure to obtain environmental permits, financing, and local and state approvals; inadequate transmission capacity, water restrictions and other problems.
