PV soars as US adds 3.3GW in 2012

The US added 3.3GW of PV capacity in 2012, more than in the three previous years combined, according to GTM Research.

The new capacity marked a 75% increase on 2011's figure of 1.89GW of new additions, bringing the country’s total installed PV base to 7.2GW.

By contrast, the US added more than 13GW of wind last year – a 92% rise on 2011's 6.8GW – driven by uncertainty over the Production Tax Credit, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.

California led the US solar market with 1.03GW of new capacity, followed by Arizona (710MW) and New Jersey (415MW).

Nevada, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Maryland, Texas and New York rounded out the top 10 state…
