US approves 1.1GW of solar and wind projects

The US Interior Department has approved two solar projects totalling 900MW and a 200MW wind farm to be constructed on public lands in California and Nevada.

NextEra Energy is developing the 750MW McCoy Solar Energy Project in southern California, which would be one of the world’s largest photovoltaic facilities. The project will provide electricity for 225,000 homes and displace about 630,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year.

Southern California Edison (SCE) expects to purchase the project’s initial 250MW of production under a 20-year agreement.

The company is purchasing more than 4,500 acres (18.2sq km) of habitat to protect three local species: The desert tortoise, burrowing owl and Mojave fringe-toed lizard.
