MEMC aims to capitalise on the SunEdison image

MEMC Electronic Materials intends to adopt the name of the solar developer it acquired in 2009 — SunEdison — underscoring its push to become a major owner of operational PV assets around the world.

Missouri-based MEMC, whose core business remains supplying wafers to the semiconductor industry, insists the name change “does not reflect a change in business strategy related to either of [our] segments”— semiconductor materials and solar energy

But the proposal nevertheless offers interesting insight into the direction in which the company believes it will evolve in the coming years.

The name change, which would not go into effect until May at the earliest, would “better reflect the synergistic nature of the two businesses and help create and maintain one powerful, global brand name”, MEMC says.
