EU exposure bites Power-One in Q4

Power-One, the world’s second largest supplier of PV inverters, has warned that it expects to make a net loss in the fourth quarter of 2012, underscoring the ongoing danger of overexposure to the European market.

Power-One anticipates a fourth-quarter net loss of $12m-$15m, compared to a net income of $21m in the third quarter.

Based in California, but with the lion’s share of its manufacturing capacity in Italy, Power-One acknowledged that “softer-than-expected” market conditions in Italy and Germany dented its bottom line. Both markets have seen sharp reductions in their feed-in tariffs, and are also suffering from a difficult financing environment.

The company also lowered its quarterly revenue forecast to $190m-$195m from its prior estimate of $210m-$230m. Power-One is due to publish its full results on…
