First Solar buys Solar Gen 2

First Solar has snapped up the 150MW pre-construction Solar Gen 2 project, which is more than a year behind schedule after facing down complaints about its siting on California farmland.

First Solar, which was recently named the world’s largest PV engineering, procurement and construction contractor in 2012, purchased the project from an affiliate of Goldman Sachs and a third equity partner for an undisclosed amount.

The project will include 40MW of modules already purchased from another supplier, with First Solar set to supply the remainder.

The original developer, SolarGen2, nabbed a 25-year power purchase agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric for the project in 2011, but faced opposition from some locals about the potential environmental impact and location in southern Imperial County.

Construction was initially to have finished by the third quarter of 2012. However, First Solar now says it will begin this year and finish in 2014.
