The multilateral has earmarked the 2016 funding to support some of the 40 50MW projects planned under the programme, mostly at a site near Benban in Upper Egypt which the EBRD said will be the largest solar complex in the world upon completion.

Its $500m will mobilise up to $1.5bn of finance from other sources, the EBRD hopes.

Egypt is a market of rapidly-growing interest to foreign investors and equipment suppliers, as it chases ambitious wind and solar development plans following the launch of a feed-in tariff scheme in 2014.

The
