GT Advanced gets Qatar PV nod

PV production equipment specialist GT Advanced Technologies said it is line to supply some of its latest kit to Qatar Solar Energy’s (QSE) new vertically-integrated facility.

GT Advanced has signed a deal with QSE to deliver its HiCz 200 monocrystalline furnace to the Doha plant, which spans research to module-making and which the Qatari venture hopes to expand from an opening 300MW production capacity to up to 2.5GW.

GT Advanced said the HiCz 200 is expected “to produce high quality n-type wafers for solar cells with efficiencies that exceed 22%" in Qatar.

According to the US equipment group, its process “produces longer ingots with greater material uniformity and lower resistivity”, lowering cost and improving wafer quality.

Dave Keck, executive vice president of GT's solar business, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for GT to have our leading edge HiCz technology selected to be a part of the first vertically-integrated PV manufacturing facility in the MENA region."

The supply agreement is subject to QSE getting Qatari government approval and finance, GT Advanced added.
