Dominion add new solar partner

Dominion Virginia Power will install a third solar PV system as part of a program to build and operate up to 30MW (DC) of company-owned facilities on leased rooftops, or on grounds of commercial businesses and public properties in its service area.

The $2.5m rooftop 800kW system at the Prologis Concorde Distribution Center in Sterling, Virginia, follows similar installations at Canon Industrial Resource Technologies in Gloucester and Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

When fully implemented, the Solar Partnership Program will generate power for as many as 7,500 homes.

"Our customers in Northern Virginia are focused on renewable energy and this installation reflects Dominion's commitment to understanding how solar power can fit into our generation mix," says Ken Barker, vice president of customer solutions at Dominion. "The partnership with Prologis will enable us to evaluate the benefits and study the impact of distributed solar generation on our electric grid."

Construction of the rooftop systems will begin this month and enter commercial operation in October.
